Created and Found Collage Elements
10:00am-3:30pm
with Artist in Residence Susan Rossiter
Sometimes it’s one little area that draws you in and makes the whole piece come together. What I love about mixed media is that anything goes, you’re not just limited to paint. In this workshop we will be making unique collage elements in the morning and creating collage assemblages in the afternoon.
I make papers, skins and collage elements when I’m short on time or energy. This process often generates inspiration and great daydreams about the next project. It’s also nice to have a drawer full of special papers you can source from when your paintings need a little something or you need to make a quick thank you card.
You’ll have enough papers, skins and elements to use in class and take home to incorporate into your art practice later.
Workshop fee includes an interesting pack of handmade and found paper samples and collage elements for inspiration, an Ampersand Gessobord panel, use of GOLDEN paints and Silver Brushes, use of shared GOLDEN Gels, Pastes and Aggregates.
· We’ll make and talk about the process of using Gels, Pastes and Aggregates to create skins for collaging or adding to your paintings
· I’ll show examples of non-traditional collage papers and where to find them
· We’ll hand paint papers using different brushes to get interesting effects
· Make papers
· I’ll demonstrate many techniques and walk the room to answer any questions and check in with you
· I’ll show how skins can be added to paintings to add texture or a focal point
· In the afternoon, we’ll create collages with our papers, talk about composition and how to get a successful collage
· Then we’ll pack our papers carefully to take home so they don’t stick to each other
Materials needed for class:
· Watercolor papers or pad, sketchbook or art journal for collages
· GOLDEN acrylic colors in Heavy Body, Fluid and High Flow (bring your acrylic set)
· Silver Brush assortment (bring your favorite brushes)
· GOLDEN Soft Gel Matte
· Palette knife
· Folder or tote to take your papers home

I’ve been making art since I was old enough to hold a bottle and the goal was always to be a “full time” artist. When I finally did go full time, it wasn’t exactly as I imagined. There have been many hurdles, and I just want to share a few of the ways I’ve navigated these challenges in hopes that you might get some information that will be helpful no matter where you are on your art journey. ALL ARTISTS WELCOME
Being a “Full-Time” artist- do you know anyone who paints 40 hours a week?
Finding your “Thing”- painting, sculpting, realism, abstraction, metal work, printmaking, beads, encaustics, pet portraits, narrowing it down and honing your skills. There are some easy ways to find your “thing”
Bringing your “A-game” – Are you a morning person? Scheduling your day based on your energy levels to maximize yourself, what to do when you you’re stuck or “not feeling it”
The “Voices” I think we’ve all heard them, the voices in our heads saying that the art we make isn’t good enough or that we need to make “something that sells” or that hyper realistic portraits and landscapes are the only art of real value
Community- the importance of an art community. Meeting with an individual or small group of artists regularly can be life changing.

Mid-Century Inspired Palette
with Artist in Residence Susan Rossiter
10:00am-3:30pm
Explore colors from the 50’s through the 70’s and create mixed media abstract paintings using acrylic, handmade papers and collage elements.
This piece was inspired by mid-century textile artist Vera Neumann- I remember a tablecloth with various shades of yellow and napkins that were yellow with orange flowers with a little bit of green/blue. Other pieces were inspired by things like an old robin’s egg blue rotary telephone and wallpaper in my grandmother’s bathroom that had illustrations of poodles soaking in tubs, putting on lipstick and getting their nails done in ochre, pale pink and gray
I encourage you to look around your home for a vintage item with color/s that inspire you and bring it (or a photo) to class.
Workshop fee includes a handmade paper and collage element pack, use of GOLDEN colors in all viscosities, use of Silver Brush Bristlon brushes,
· We’ll talk about color and creating a successful palette
· I’ll demonstrate how I layer opaque and transparent paint and papers until I get a piece I really like
· In between demo’s I’ll be walking the room to answer questions and check in with you
· Attendees will get a pack of handmade papers, acrylic skins and collage elements to incorporate into their pieces
· I’ll have some GOLDEN colors and Silver Brushes to share during class
· We’ll create 2-3 contemporary abstract paintings using mid-century palettes
Materials for class:
· 2-3 canvas, wood panels or heavy watercolor paper all prepped with gesso any size. (If you are a “fast painter” bring more) I’m using Ampersand GessoBord.
· Water container, rags, palette

Favorite acrylics set and brushes, palette knife
