Japanese Gyotaku Fish Printing

This ancient technique has been around for thousands of years. Japanese fishermen took ink and rice paper on their boats and made prints from the fish they caught. This was how they recorded fish species and bragged about their catches. In this class we’ll be by the beach in Bonaire! First we’ll make a few fish prints Gyotaku style and then we’ll enhance them with GOLDEN paints. This is an easy step by step class for any skill level. The class includes Japanese papers, inks, use of fish molds (seahorses, several species of fish & starfish) GOLDEN iridescent and metalic paints, QoR Watercolors, brushes and dotting tools. Date/Time tentative depending on the dive schedule.

Arte Povera

I’m convinced this is where the recycled and repurposed art that we see so much of today began with this small group of Italian artists.

In this class you'll get a little art history and then we'll make our own Arté Povera assemblage painting pieces using acrylics, twig bundles, old postage stamps and Italian papers

Materials Fee & List of what is supplied:

$20 Kit fee includes cradled wood panel, an Arte Povera class kit with various “poverty art” assemblage supplies- kits are unique and may include any combination of flattened bottle caps, items from nature, twigs, used postage stamps, birch tree skin, fabric, shredded money, quilling paper, string, leather and metal scrap, wine cork slices, Italian book pages, beads and more.

Soft Gel Medium and a stronger adhesive- heavy gel or tacky glue

Your favorite collage papers and any interesting items you have been squirreling away for a special project.

Deep Textured Abstracts

In this class, there are 2 options, one is easy and relaxed; the other is little more labor intensive with additional steps. Students will learn both techniques and work on 2 pieces simultaneously. We will be working on deep substrates meaning the panels or canvases are 1 1/2 inches deep. I am known for elaborately painting the sides of my paintings and I’m going to show you how it’s done. There are several demonstrations throughout the day and everyone leaves with a gorgeous texture-licious painting.

Class kits will include a collage pack, leaf skeletons, texture paste and more!

Subliminal Abstracts

I love hiding messages and prose in my paintings. When creating an abstract piece, I’m often thinking of what I have to say and how I might infuse that message into a painting. You may have a message for the people in your house, visitors or you may have a personal reminder for yourself. In this class we are going to do some abstract work with a message in mind and incorporate that message into the painting. Your message will be as visible or invisible as you choose. Your audience may not be able to see the actual words but your message will get to the viewer subliminally. Your message can be kind or bold- this is a judgement free zone where you can say whatever you want.

Please have a subliminal message in mind before class. I will email you before class asking what your message is so I can make some papers for you to use in class. The class fee includes everything needed for class: canvas, GOLDEN paints, art papers, miscellaneous collage items such as printed tea bags, old book pages, brushes, palette knives and gel medium.

The example photo is called “Hypervigilance”  The word danger is hidden in the painting thousands of times if you look closely.  This painting can also be seen in the April 2019 issue of World of Interiors Magazine.

$45 to register, go to the “Shop” page and you'll see the class seats for Subliminal Abstracts for sale. The week before class I’ll send out an email with directions and any specifics. Susan.Rossiter@yahoo.com if you have any questions!

Working Large: Big Chicken Collage

Painting large can be a scary thing. My approach includes diving in fearlessly with wild abandon and reining it in toward the end. This system has really worked for me and I will show you my whole process from start to finish as we prepare a background, measure for successful placement, build layer over layer of paint and paper, use special attention on the edges of the painting and then bring it all together with some special touches and tedious details. Finally! Something to go on that big empty wall!

Materials Fee $30 includes:

18x24 1/3/8” deep canvas, large Collage Paper Pack with lots of beautiful art papers, shredded money, old book pages, maps, and more. Acrylic paints to share, use of pigment pens, stencils, spray acrylics and anything on the art supply community buffet. I’ll also have some chicken images for reference and inspiration.

Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Soft Gel Medium (I use Golden)
Favorite acrylics set and brushes
Your favorite collage papers
Water container

Optional: You are welcome to bring a larger canvas and keep the 18x24 for another project. I chose this size because it will fit in a large suitcase.

Sacred Story Cards

Sacred Story Cards

This course supports students as they create an entire deck of ANGEL CARDS all their own. Their Sacred Story comes alive when they utilize mixed media techniques to share their heartfelt visions. Each card is a 6 x 4” treasure of truth. And every student will leave class with a deck of 15-20 cards that can be utilized in their day to day journeys.

Vintage ephemera, trinkets and treasures embellish these cards. Along with beautiful acrylic paint and ink techniques. And every card has a front and back-side. We have plenty of room to create light and love while you write down your story (and the magic of your creative life thus far)! Every card has a “theme” as we work across the deck. As we explore light, transition and shadow elements of our experiences, you’ll come to better understand your truth. Your authentic voice. And what makes you an amazing, beautiful, soulful sister.

I'm substituting for Denise Braun this year and will be keeping the classes as close as possible to her style. Supply lists are the same- any changes will be posted ASAP.

How would Picasso paint this chicken? How might Klimt or Modigliani finish this chicken? I’m going to provide some interesting suggestions and samples to inspire you and demonstrate my own specific techniques for drawing, painting and adding the finishing touches and tiny details- Combined with your own style and tastes you’ll go home with a fantastic piece and stretch your skills just outside of the box (coop!)
You’ll have freedom to use your favorite mixed media products and to use the provided examples of various chicken types and many artist styles in any combination. I’ll work with you as much or as little as you need to complete your piece. Feel free to email with questions susan.rossiter@yahoo.com

Felted Flower Rings Virginia Beach, VA

This class is a great introduction to felting because we’ll be covering a little bit of everything- wet felting, needle felting, and a variation of a very cool technique called “Upwolfing” courtesy of the amazing Irene Van Der Wolf. We’re working with a nice, big, colorful selection of beautiful alpaca and silk fibers, wool roving and glittery angel hair. You’ll be able to choose any colors you like to make 3 rings- enough for you to wear and share. If you have any questions: Susan.Rossiter@yahoo.com
The process is fun and the end result is a cool statement ring- you’ll have fun explaining how you made it to admirers!

Watercolor Fish Virginia Beach, VA

Using micro paintbrushes is not for everyone- for me, creating a small pattern and filling in all the tiny details is meditative and relaxing. Add a small group of nice people and some music and I could paint all day. If you like getting lost in repetition, you’ll love this class. This is a fun class whether you’ve been drawing fish all your life or if this is your first time.
These little fish start out with a basic shape and then we add features and patterns with ink and watercolor to make them unique. I’ll have lots of fish examples for reference or you can bring your own images. I’ll guide you step by step to create a detailed watercolor fish painting you’ll want to take home and frame. If you have any questions: Susan.Rossiter@yahoo.com
